In 1986, under a distant mother and dying father, 11-year-old Eve Hofmann is coming of age. With one friend, Silas Alder, a classmate at school, Eve is delighted to make another when her mother begins dating again.
Eve is lonely and tries to be nice to Valerie Pleasant. After a horrifying incident in the basement, Eve discovers Valerie is anything but pleasant.
Young love blooms between Eve and Silas. But after a moment of indiscretion, Eve begins to withdraw. Soon, she and Silas go their separate ways.
Years later, a widow with twin boys, Eve hires Silas, now contractor, to turn an inherited schoolhouse into a home. Embers of passion are kindled between them once more.
Then Valerie shows up at her door after Eve escapes her own unhappy marriage. Able to relate, Eve opens her newly transformed schoolhouse/home to Valerie until she can secure travel arrangements to move south. But Valerie hasn't changed.
Now Eve is on the verge of losing everything once more, including her own life.
