Doug trotted over when he saw me, volleyball in hand. “You birdwatching?”

“There’s only seagulls.”

“I mean chicks, dummy.” He laughed, bouncing the ball off my head. “Did you see some of those swimsuits?”

Before I could answer, Nora emerged from the bathhouse.

Doug jabbed my side with his elbow. “She got some knockers over the summer.”

Her swimming suit was pale blue. Something modest, but she filled it out in all the right places. And the top…

“Close your mouth, Simon. You’re drooling.”

I let it snap shut.

“Maybe if you play classical music she’ll let her milk down,” Doug dropped the ball and held his hands up, making squeezing motions, “Gentle, remember.”

Anger whipped through me. I took a step toward him.

“Joking, bro.” He took a step back and scooped up the ball. “You better play it cool. Nothing more unattractive to a bird than neediness.”

Nora spotted me and made her way over.

Doug winked. “Later.” 

Nora strolled up to me, her gaze fixed on my torso, then trailed over my biceps.

Suddenly, I no longer felt like an ugly, lonely boy, but a man. Sticking my chest out, I stood a little straighter, and headed for the water.

She followed right behind.

I glanced back. “You know, we are a lot alike, you and me.”

Nora blushed. “Told ya.”

In an instant, the girl I had loved became the woman of my dreams.
