The wind stopped. Calm ensued, more unsettling than the violent gale. It was close to midnight.
I sat at the edge of the bed.
Florence crawled in next to me and shut off the lamp.
Something was definitely wrong with her.
“What is it?” I asked, laying down.
“Nothing,” she snapped.
Silence.
“Have a good visit with Marissa?” Her angry tone carried the force of the wind.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I pulled the covers over us.
Florence tossed them off. “What did she want?”
“Just to see how the girls were doing.” I paused. “Did you know Marvin Baker before he moved here and took a job with Andersons?”
“Why? Did she say I did?”
“She alluded to it.”
“I didn’t know him before he came here.”
“Don’t get so defensive. I’m just telling you what she said.”
“And you believe her instead of me.”
“You don’t tell me anything so there’s nothing to believe.”
“Fine.”
“She is their mother,” I said, realizing what was going on. “Besides, that was before us.”
“She looked at you like she wanted you to take all her clothes off with your teeth,” anger slashed each word.
“What am I to do about the way she looks at me?”
“Not smile,” she flipped over and turned the bedside lamp on. A spark shot out. She ignored it, her green eyes glared at me, snapping like a crackling fire, “Talk, be polite, but for the sake of all that is good don’t you dare smile. And for your information, no one forced you to marry me.”
“Nothing I say is right so I’ll say nothing.”
Then she was on top of me, her face inches from mine.
Beyond frustrated, I reached for her arms to set her aside and reason with her, and suddenly her mouth was on mine.
My head hit the pillow.
It took all of a millisecond to realize what she was doing. Then my hands came up to her cheeks, through her hair, and she kissed the socks off me. Until my head spun and my heart drummed in my ears.
It was an angry kiss, one meant to punish. She was mad. Why was beyond me, but oh, what punishment!

Uncover the truth, get hooked on the suspense!
