Grady said very little as we entered the house. He didn’t need to. His clenched jaw, pajama pants, unbuttoned flannel shirt like he’d been in a hurry to get dressed, said it all.

I welcomed the heat, washed coffee cups, and put them away while Grady got ready for church. When he returned to the kitchen, I headed for the shower.

Now at the breakfast table across from me, Grady was dressed in a blue shirt, matching tie, and gray slacks.

“No words,” he muttered.

I smoothed my hair with a flat hand. “I suppose you wanted a wife that’s not silly.”

“Too late to worry about that now.” He took a sip of coffee.

“So much for having no words,” I said.

“I don’t know whether to kiss you or strangle you.” He was nervous. Something I’d learned to detect in the short time I’d been married to him.

“Thanks.”

“What were you thinking?” He held up his hand. “Sorry, what were you hoping to accomplish?”

“I wanted to find the flippers to prove to you I’m, I wasn’t…I mean, I did something crazy. That is, sometimes I do crazy things, but I’m not crazy.”

He blew out a breath. “It doesn’t change my commitment to you either way. You know that, don’t you?”
